ORIGINS AND BRIEF HISTORY
The Birth of Galician
The development from Latin to Galician was taken place progressively. So it is impossible to set a precise date after which the spoken language can be considered Galician. At the end of the 8th century, church and administration’s Latin is so far from people’s language that we can speak of two different linguistic systems: Latin and Galician.
Latin, as religious and literary language, continued to be the vehicle of the liturgy, literature, and administrative and legal acts, even though when this language was quite incomprehensible to the public at large. This situation started to break down in the 8th century when the first texts in the Galician language were written.
